Updates to the 2026 Form W-4

W4 document

The IRS has released important updates to the 2026 Form W-4, and these changes will directly impact how federal income tax is withheld from employee paychecks.

The 2026 Form W-4 features significant updates, including an expanded 5-page structure, a higher $2,200.00 Child Tax Credit, and a revised Deductions Worksheet incorporating new tax benefits for tips, overtime, and specific vehicle interest under the One, Big, Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA). The form also adds a dedicated checkbox for claiming exemption from withholding

  • Increased Child Tax Credit (Step 3): The credit for qualifying children under age 17 has increased to $2,200.00 (previously $2,000.00)
  • Dedicated Exemption Checkbox: A new, official checkbox has been added for employees to claim exemption from federal income tax withholding.
  • Increased Form Length: Due to expanded instructions and worksheets, the document has expanded to five pages (up from four).
